Credit Note causing Sage failure: Posting failed.

We've experienced this problem before and somehow were able to work through it.  This time we wanted a better resolution of why Sage is returning such an unuseful message.

We've been using Sage 300 for over a year but there will be times still when we need to apply a credit for a transaction from the old accounting system.  This error is frustrating for many reasons but primarily because there is no indication which line item is causing the failure.

We created a credit note (Damaged goods) for multiple items, in exactly the same style as many credits before.  After selecting POST, we receive the message of the Posting failed.

Turns out that one of the items we were including is an Inactive item which we have not sold since migrating into Sage.  After much research, it was found there are no Location Details (Inventory Control) for this item.  Since we are not stocking the item, noone even checked to see if a Location record had even been created.

SOLUTION:

Create a location detail record for the item and create the credit note again.

  • it does seem mildly dumb because you are not returning to stock. But it probably needs a location detail to determine a cost for the item in case you were not doing a credit based off an invoice. I agree that error message is useless though
