Depends on what you mean by "Work with."

Data Porter and Explorer/Analyzer exports require Excel (as the latter utilizes Office Web Components, which corresponding look for Excel).  XLS Imports and such via SSMS only require the MS Access database engine to be installed on the importing machine (in addition to SSMS).
