Automatic backup error An unknown error occurred compressing the database files.

SUGGESTED
Posted By FormerMember

Recently the Sage 50 Automatic Backup is failing for all companies on my sage server. The error message is 'An unknown error occurred compressing the database files.' However manual backup from UI will run without any problems. Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, is there a fix for it?

There are several possible causes and solutions. Here are possible fixes according to knowledgebase entry ID:14173

    Cause
    • There are files in your company data folder that do not belong there.
    • Client has two directories on the same root named with the first 8 characters.
    • The Server is going to a network drive, not a local drive.
    • The name of the folder in which the backups are being saved has changed.
    • Backup file is over 4.2 gigabytes
    • Automatic Back Up did not run.

    Resolution

Section I: Updating Automatic Backup Configuration

    1. Open the Automatic Backup Utility.
    2. Click Open.
    3. Browse to the location of your .ptc file that corresponds to the company in which you are receiving errors.
    4. In the section labeled Save backup to, click the Browse button.
    5. Navigate to the folder in which you'll be saving your backups, so that the system knows that this renamed folder is the location for your backup files.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Save.

Section II: Moving unneeded files out of the company data folder

    1. Backup your company; see Article ID 10264: "How to make a backup" in Related Resources.

    3. Browse to your company data folder; see Article ID 10199: "How to locate company directories" in Related Resources.
    4. Move all files and file types not listed below to another folder:
    • .DAT
    • Details.ini
    • Company.ini
    • .cac and .cax
    • Version.txt
    • KMSKeys.xml
    • KeysBackup folder
    1. Move OPTIONS.DAT, ENVUSER.DAT, ENVSESS.DAT, SERIAL.DAT, and STATUS.DAT.
    2. Verify there are no .ptb files in the KeysBackup folder.  Any .ptb files found should be moved to another folder.
    3. Open your company to allow the .DDF files to recreate.
    4. Close Sage 50.
    5. Verify the Automatic Back Up completes with no errors.

Section III: Server going to a network drive

    2. Close Sage 50 on all computers.

    4. Open the .ptc file and verify the Company Directory and Save backup to: are local on the server.
    5. Repeat step 4 for all .ptc files found.
    6. Verify that you can now run the backup.
