Sales Invoices Numbers

Why is it when I've sorted the customers names in alphabetical order and then print the invoices the customers do not remain in alphabetical order.  Therefore, the invoice number that is assigned to the invoice is not in order.  This makes it very difficult to import receipts when matching the sales invoices by invoice number.

For example,

Last Name Invoice # Assigned Should be Invoice #
A 1 1
B 5 2
C 2 3
D 7 4
E 9 5
F 3 6

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I would like to know why this happens out of alphabetical order as well, we have a work around by manually assigning invoice numbers, but that takes time, and has confused so many of my employees when training this way. Takes time to assign the numbers, but saves time when not having to jump around our files that are alphabetical.

    Hi   and  ,

Thank you for your patience. It seems your issue might be linked to transaction number sequencing errors. This guide suggests potential causes like incorrect company file usage, damaged files, or conflicts with previously used numbers, which could affect invoice numbering consistency.

Here's a quick summary of the recommended fixes:

    • Confirm the correct company file is in use, avoiding duplicates.
    • Address damaged files by deleting or renaming certain file types within the data path.
    • If the issue persists, it could be related to previously used numbers. The system might be preventing reuse, leading to out-of-sequence numbering.

For detailed instructions, please see the full article here: Transaction number sequencing not advancing properly.

Thank you for this answer, however, this does not resolve the issue unfortunately.  I spent hours trying to figure out this issue with support on the phone and they were going to escalate it six months ago.  Haven't heard anything.  So I was hopeful that maybe someone else within the community support was having the same issue and possibly would know how to fix it.
