Most people create the file in excel first.

You can convert an Excel worksheet to a text file by using the Save As command. In Excel, select File and then click Save As. The Save As dialog box appears. In the Save as type box, choose the text file format for the worksheet. For example, click CSV (Comma delimited).

Then import the CSV file.

Can I import without assigning a “sequence number” in field #1? If I don’t, would the system assign one or would the import fail? I would think it would be a great inconvenience to remember the last sequence # used in order to import the next journal entry. (For example, next import is 2 days later or several accountants are importing into SAGE)

No - You need to assign the sequence number. There is no sequence number to remember, you create your own sequence number. That how you tell the system what entries go together for each journal entry. If you are just importing one journal entry then the sequence # is the same for each line. If you are importing multiple journal entries, you assign a different sequence # for the rows relates to that journal entry. The sequence number is a unique number use to identify all the records associate with a transaction.
