It is my understanding that the limit is for your company database and does not include attachments, reports, or backup files

Char is correct. The 10 GB limit only applies to the .MDF file, not anything in the Files folder.

It shouldn't have any noticeable impact on daily use performance, since the attachments are spread out over many records and record types. But it will make your backups larger and take longer to create them.
