Use of API's or Spreadsheet Server

SUGGESTED

I am a new user and I am striking out with capabilities I am familiar with. Has anyone been able to figure out any sort of workaround for API connectors or connecting to Insight's Spreadsheet Server software?

We're using Sage 300 CRE

Have you tried using ODBC or Office Connector?

i'm looking into that currently; however, if a third party needs an API connector, is OBDC an alternative?

Amanda -  Depends on what you're trying to link to.

If you're interfacing with Microsoft Excel, most users use Office Connector or a straight ODBC DSN.  Microsoft Access, Word and Outlook are typically done using ODBC although I believe Office Connector was working on some Word capabilities as well.  Office Connector is particularly strong on Excel based financials or if you need to work with multiple data folders.

Crystal Reports uses a Sage provided ODBC source to extract data.

Regarding other programs, if it is ODBC compliant, and most third party reporting programs are, you should be able to access data by setting up and using an ODBC DSN.

Most ODBC connections with Sage 300 CRE are read only.  You can do write backs on designated tables and fields using Office Connector Write or Microsoft Access.  In addition, Office Connector has API capabilities to write back into job cost miscellaneous worksheets, which is a huge deal if you're doing your WIP reporting directly in Sage.

There are a whole series of ODBC and Office Connector classes at the annual Sage User Group conferences and if you want to learn this in detail, I highly recommend them.

Thank you! I'm going to start digging in so this will be helpful to keep in mind. Where/when is the Sage User group conference? Is it: 2020 Tug Nation Users Conference in New Orleans?

Yes, that's the conference.  I'm one of the volunteer instructors and teach the ODBC track, so you're talking about something near and dear to me. Feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] if you have anything specific that's not a good fit for the community forum.

I second that. Mike is an excellent instructor and  the knowledge gained from just one of his ODBC classes would pay for the conference.
