Sage 300 CRE - Lack of Any Real Updates or Enhancements

We have been a long-time user of Sage 300 CRE (10+ years).  The upgrade and product enhancement process has always been poor, and it seems to have gotten progressively worse in the past few years.  I'd go as far as to say it's egregious - users pay thousands of dollars a year for upgrades and product support, yet all Sage seems to ever do is fix a glitch here and there.  For instance, users have been asking for Sage to make the font bigger in certain windows, or give us more characters on certain lines - even simple fixes like that are ignored, version after version after version.  We pay what I consider over-priced annual support (now it's at 22% of license costs??) for an utter lack of product enhancements and development.  I ask my fellow Sage users, is my company the only one that is absolutely incensed over this?  And I ask Sage - are you trying to sunset this product, and you're just not letting your users know?  Has the budget for Sage 300 development been slashed down to nothing?  A few weeks ago, I saw a thread pop up about this same issue, and the powers that be over at Sage quickly shut it down.  All I know, is we are SICK AND TIRED of paying exorbitant fees every year and getting little to no product enhancements in return.  It's almost criminal...

  • Answers to you questions from someone who deals with Sage 300 CRE on a daily basis.  My answers are my opinions

    1. Any recommendations you make usually are responded to with a "Speak to your Sage consultant", which translates into "Yeah there is a work around that you'll have to pay your consultant for".
      1. Most of the time they refer you to your consultant for questions that might be company specific. I get it feels like the run around.  But to be honest your consultant should know you setup and systems better than Sage support.
    2. Rather than fixing it for everyone they will change you individually every time they "Fix The Problem". This is especially true with reports that have been sold over and over again rather than adding them to the system for all. 
      1. Sage is not in the business of creating reports for clients. There are approx. 1,500 reports in the system out of the box.  I know of no ERP that has that many.  All my counter parts at other ERP’s build reports that are standard in Sage 300 CRE.
    3. How about an easy question? Who is currently logged into Sage? Is there a dropdown for that?
      1. Actually, an easy one – you can use the PSQL Monitor to determine that from any computer as long as you have access to the server. You can see who is using what files in Sage. Name convention is based on your Network and how they are accessing the data. You IT can set up a login for you on your PC for PSQL Monitor with out Admin rights. It if rare for any database ERP to not require Admin privileges to do tasks involving the database and users. You can also boot user out if they have left the building depending on their task (I would not recommend booting someone off that has an active task, but if they are in a report or inquiry that should be OK).
      2. Making users aware of the need to log off is common when leaving the office – But you can’t make them.

    None of these issues are exclusive to Sage.  Just my thoughts.

    1. Most Sage customers I talk to have the same issues, and the same run around. If you had the same consultant from the beginning then you may be right, but we have been through a few, and each time they will charge you to "Learn your system" and we really don't like getting trapped into paying for things that most feel should be included in well written software. If the list of fixes was longer than the list of work arounds i would feel better.

    2. Over 1500 reports that are so difficult to make changes to you have to call the "Sage Expert" and pay them to "Fix It", report designer looks and feels like a windows 3.1 piece of software. You are correct Sage is not in the business of writing reports, all the Sage consultants are in the business of writing reports because it is too difficult for normal users to do it.

    3. Or Sage could just tell us who is logged in, must be a huge programming challenge, maybe they haven't found the right person yet who can tackle this. It must be so mind numbingly difficult to comprehend that everyone is afraid to tackle this one. We can only hope that after all the years of asking for this that a miracle could happen. So if they can't do this one simple thing how am I to trust in them doing anything really complicated.

    Sage 300 CRE is old code, old database engines, it has a early windows feel to it, some parts remind me of DOS. 

    I realize there are many who want to defend Sage, either because they have invested many years into getting it to work the way they want it to, or it's a revenue stream for them. We can go round and round about this but the bottom line for most of us is the money. Am I getting good value for what I am paying for and the answer keeps coming back NO. It seems from the comments from others that once you get Sage installed you start bleeding money...

    Just my thoughts...none of these issues are exclusive to Sage, but they are Sage issues none the less...
