Data security and reducing potential threats

At Sage we take our customers’ privacy and data security very seriously. As more and more business is conducted online, data security becomes an ever more important part of running a business. We need to work together to reduce the risk of potential threats.

What do we mean by threats to security?

Malicious software, or “malware”, is one of the biggest threats to online security. Most malware targets user credentials (user or login name and password); and once the hackers have those details, the intention is to download further malware to victims’ machines. The most common route to delivery is generally through email and malicious or compromised websites - adopting security software and educating your teams on the use of caution prior to clicking any links is widely advised as a route to prevention.

Phishing is another common tool used in cybercrime. Phishing is most commonly where targets are contacted by email, telephone or text message by someone posing as a legitimate business encouraging individuals to provide personally identifiable data, such as usernames and passwords, which may be used later to compromise systems and data.

What can you do to protect yourself?

  • Prioritize installing and updating security software
  • Train employees on the use of caution prior to clicking any links
  • Stay abreast of cyber security and hacking trends and understand their impact to your business
  • Continually evaluate your system and isolate any vulnerable systems
  • In addition to using complex passwords (i.e. long passwords containing a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters), also use multi-factor authentication, where available

To support our customers, Sage has published several blogs around staying secure on our community:
