Amortizable asset auto populating 5 year SF, but I need it at 15 year estimated life.

SOLVED

I have an amortizable asset that is a 15 year estimated life asset, but the system is automatically making it a 5 year asset. I have a similar asset placed in service 1 month earlier that worked just fine. This was placed in service 12/17/2018.

When creating a new asset, and you enter the Property Type of Z to indicate an intangible, the program defaults to an estimated life of 5 years -- just exactly as you discovered.  Your corrective action is to edit this value.  Type 15, and then tab out of the Estimated Life field.

Because the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1993 standardized the recovery period for intangibles at 15 years, I have personally recommended to our programmers that the default should be changed to 15.  But you know something, Josh, Sage is more apt to listen to you, our customer, than they will to me.

I recommend that if you have time, please navigate to the webpage "Ideas" (it's on the right side of the dashboard at the top of this screen) and enter your suggestion to improve our software. In this case, recommend that intangibles should default to an estimated life of 15 years in the Tax book when creating a new asset.
