Need to Dispose an Asset in March That Was Setup in Error in February 2019 Without Messing Up 2019 Depreciation

SUGGESTED

I setup an asset in Sage in error in February 2019.  I need to dispose of the asset as of March 2019.  If I backdate the disposal to March 2019, will that cause any errors in depreciation for 2019?

    Hello dfranklin,

There will not be an error as such. Sometimes, when entering a disposal date prior to the current through date of an asset, the Gain/Loss calculation can go a little goofy but that is easily fixed by hitting the Calculate button when Viewing the Transaction later.

Generally, we recommend running depreciation back prior to the disposal date prior to entering the disposal: See How to dispose an asset for more details.

Delray, I set this asset up in February 2019.  It was setup in error.  Depreciation has been run for February 2019 and March 2019.  If I dispose of this asset on April 1, 2019, before running April depreciation, will that mess up anything?

That really depends on how to define "mess up". If the asset was never supposed to be there, then this is not a disposal which is a transaction which will stay there always. It is a deletion or inactivation, then a manual adjustment of the GL would need to happen to remove any posted depreciation.

If you choose to not have to do a manual adjustment to the GL, then yes, an April 1 disposal should work.
