If they have permissions users can add words to the master dictionary. If they want to use an individual dictionary, that must be defined in the user preferences. 

Thanks Caren for your kind reply.  From what I can tell there never have been any permissions set-up/granted for either a master dictionary nor individually - no wonder - would you mind directing me to where I can find thorough instructions for setting the system up with said permissions?  Thanks again for your kind assistance.
