Setting up a second company

SUGGESTED

I have been using Timeslips for a couples of years for a law firm.  Now one attorney is retiring and billing separately. I need to set up a separate billing for that attorney.  Can I run 2 companies/law firms at the same time?

Yes, Timeslips allows you to have multiple databases. You will just need to make sure you enter everything in the correct database. The path is always shown in the bottom left of the screen.
To create a new database, go to file - new and create a new database in a separate specific folder

While it is certainly possible to run more than one Timeslips database in the same way that it is possible to have Microsoft Word open and edit more than one document, I would caution against creating two different databases unless you really have to since switching between them can be a real PITA if you have to switch often.

You can also allow more than one set of clients to reside in the same database and use either a Client Custom Field or custom naming scheme to keep them separated and then just use that field as a filter when running reports.

This second option allows you to have everything in one database, but be able to slice and dice the data for Company X vs. Company Y at your option.

    Hope this helps.

Try this as a practical solution. Stay with ONE database. For those clients with old firm, use the existing Timeslips Bill and Layout Statements. For the new firm, use a different set of Bills and Layouts (e.g. New Firm Bills). Thus, you have the benefit of keeping only one database, which is very useful for data, financial records, etc, but also be able to bill out for two (or more) companies that will be client specific.

    Good luck.
