The above structure that you shared with us, is this in your Default Approval Structure (DAS) or is this in your Workflow?

I am going to give you my advise, but I know it might be a bit hard to follow, so if you do get stuck along the way you can feel free to give me a shout.

I am assuming that you currently only have a DAS setup - and that is fine because the DAS shows which employees need to be managers.

I would firstly create an approval group for the managers - each manager should have their own approval group.  You can find Sage's guide here:

Lets say your Manager is called John, then maybe name the approval group John approve and make sure to only add John to this approval group.

Once you have created an approval group you will create a workflow.  You will add the approval group to the top of the workflow, then all the employees that report to him underneath the approval group.  Sage's how to create a workflow guide can be found here:

Now when the employees apply for leave it will go to the manager then to the ESS admin.  However, when the manager applies for leave it will go to the director.
