Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When should I install the update?

A: The update should be installed in a new pay period in March, before you have printed payslip and reports, or paid employees in the current pay period. Refer to the Software Release Notes for more details.

Take note:

  • South African companies - install in March for the 2022-2023 tax tables, ETI changes, reimbursive travel prescribed rate per kilometer and medical aid tax credits to apply correctly.
  • Malawi companies - install the update in March for the tax year-end changes to apply correctly

Q: What should I do if I get the message "Backup Failed" when making a backup before installing an update?

A: Please refer to the article on the Sage Knowledgebase Error: 'Backup Failed' when you are making a backup.

Q: What should I do once I have installed the update?

A: When you log in to your RSA company, as list of actions to be taken in March can be reviewed:

  • Amend the employee wages to align with new National Minimum Wage values
  • Amend the ETI Minimum Wage codes according to the new National Minimum Wage values (Payroll > Definitions > System Description Codes > ETI Codes)
  • If any employee should be excluded for ETI purposes, create a new Wage Code and link the employee
  • Review the ETI Remuneration (Payroll > Definitions > ETI Definitions)
  • Additional tick box for record with Tax Status "PSP Companies" - tax percentage change based in Financial Year End
  • Add or Amend Payroll Definition as to accommodate taxable and exempt portions of Long Service Awards
  • If you have captured any Travel Transactions before updating to the current release in the current tax year, the rate per kilometer will have calculated at R3.82 per kilometer. In order to correct this, delete the transactions and recapture them to apply the increased rate of R4.18 per kilometer

Refer to the Software Release Notes for more details.

Q: Should I update my February Tax Year-end Copy System to Release 5.8a?

A: The release version for February 2022 is either Release 5.7a or 5.7b, and it is not necessary to update the copy system to Release 5.8a.

Take note, if you are on 5.7a, be sure to install all the latest patch files available on the Sage Portal or Software Downloads page

Q: I have already updated my February Tax Year-end Copy System to Release 5.8a, will this be a problem?

A: If you have already updated you February Tax Year-end Copy System to Release 5.8a, it will not be an issue as this release includes the same IRP5/IT3a Report for TAX2022 available in Release 5.7a and 5.7b, and the tax calculations are based on the tax year of your company..

It is however important to review the values of your EMP201 before and after the software update, to ensure none of you statutory calculations were affected and changed(e.g. no general recalculation was done).
