How to download and install the latest Sage 50 Product and Payroll Update

2 minute read time.

Sage 50 Accounting releases updates in order to coincide with the release of CRA Payroll tax table changes.   This year is no exception.  The Product Update includes any federal and provincial payroll tax changes that take effect January 1, 2014 as well as product enhancements.  For Sage 50 2014, the update is release 2 (2014.2).  For Sage 50 2013, the update is release 4 (2013.4).

Thanks to the Auto Deployment feature in Sage 50, downloading and installing the product and payroll updates is way easier and faster than before. For customers who are running Sage 50 Accounting 2013 and 2014 with a valid Sage Business Care Plan, if they have the box ‘Automatically Download Product Updates and Prompt user to install Them’ checked under Setup, User Preferences, Options, the update file will be downloaded automatically to the default download location when they open Sage 50.

For Windows XP, the default location for download is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Sage Software\Simply Accounting\Downloads

For Windows Vista, 7 or 8, the default download location is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Sage Software\Simply Accounting\Downloads

After the download is completed, when you close sage 50, you will be prompted to either install the update now or have it remind you later.  If you choose to install it now, the software closes and the update installation begins.

Just in case for whatever reason the check mark for automatically download product updates is removed, you can still download the update by opening Sage 50.  Then, go to Help in the menu bar and select Check for Product Updates.  A message will pop up, telling you an update is available for you to download, with the size of the update file.

When the update wizard begins, you might come across a pop up regarding Windows update.  You can follow the on-screen instruction to click No to stop the installation and install your windows update first.  If you run your Sage 50 update and see this message again, click Yes to continue the update installation.

The next window you see is the End User License Agreement (EULA).  Please read through it and put a check mark to the box to accept it.  Then, click next and the update will be installed, which may take some time.

Once the installation is completed, you might be prompted to restart your computer.  If you get this pop up, please click Restart Now.  If you do not get this pop up, you will be immediately greeted with a window saying your installation is successfully done, with 3 options given.  Depending on what you would like to do, you can have all 3 boxes checked or you can just keep the check mark besides Open Sage 50 only and click finish.

With your Sage 50 opened, you can choose to open your data file and follow the on-screen instruction to update the data to the latest format.
