Sage 2024 version update

SOLVED

Upon updating my Sage 50 Acct Edition to the 2024 Version I get a warning that my date files are on a cloud server and therefore there WILL be issues with the data files that Sage staff will not be willing to solve or help. I find this a bit disconcerting to have this appear now and not previously. Cloud servers have been around for a long time and even Sage Accounting is on a cloud.

I feel this warning should have been issued a year or more ago. Is the 2024 version now having problems with being on a cloud server hence why the warning? Has there been issues with previous versions being on the cloud server?

I am wondering if I should put the data files on an external drive rather than on my computer. Would there be any issues with that method?

Thanks,

Heather

I just sent you the copy of the email I received about this back in May.  I thought it was also here as an Announcement but I can't see it under that forum.  I think this addresses what you are talking about.

Basically all files shared on a cloud service like DropBox, OneDrive, etc. can have problems with simultaneous access due to the nature of the syncing files.  I don't know all the tech aspects of this but it's been reported several times here.  I believe there is at least one tech support article in the Knowledgebase about extra files showing up in the *.saj folder and what to do the fix it.

As far as I know the issue has been around for years and may not be in Sage's control - but I don't know the tech issues behind it all.  I thought it was not a supported environment for running Sage 50.

I am wondering if I should put the data files on an external drive rather than on my computer. Would there be any issues with that method?

I wouldn't run the data files on an external drive myself.  I prefer the speed of a regular hard drive.  You don't have to use a location that syncs to a cloud service.  However, you can create your backups in a folder that syncs with the cloud service.

Thanks Richard - I just got your email so will look at it later.

Good to know about the external drive - I have been doing backups to that tho - which I will continue - and look at the cloud folder for backups as well.

I think my issue was that somehow I started using OneDrive without realizing it - so just kept going. Technology can be sneaky and next thing you know you are using something you didn't realize!

Glad to see you are still around Richard!

    Take care,

Hi   thank you for raising this issue. This message will occur if your data file is saved with a folder named "OneDrive", "Dropbox" or "My Drive" regardless if your folder is synced to the cloud or not.  The team has put together the following article with details: Warning: "The file you want to open is located in a folder used for cloud.."

Hi - I am not computer savvy in a lot of areas. My folder looks like this -

The file location shown in the clipping does not indicate that it is a OneDrive folder.

However I do have the 'synced' logo in the status column. I don't know if that means the the CHL is located in OneDrive or if it is safe where it is located as above but also somehow in the OneDrive?

I now have copied the above file to another folder as per below clipping.

The only difference is there is no 'Status' column. So am guessing this means I am safe.

In the original location, you have the files stored in your My Documents.  Many systems have this folder syncing online.  You can click in the address bar to the right of Sage50 Data and it will show you the full path so you can see what it says.

    SUGGESTED

This article on How can I tell if my files are synced to a cloud service confirms that that check mark indicates the folder is synced with OneDrive

Would suggest following the steps on this article to change the data location

I like your suggestion about cloud and external drive.  It was having a cloud backup that saved me very little rework to do on a computer crash...thus the external drive was pointless at this point.  Plus I work on 2 different computers to the cloud is nice to have.  But that being said I do like you suggestion.

I never feel I am on the cloud as I have it off when I work so it runs as if it is on the hard drive but might be worth moving things around...got my new computer since the crash a few months ago.

Onedrive is the worst for taking over your files without you knowing it.  You could easily have accidentally allowed it when there was a Windows update and never have known.  It has happened to me twice now.  I check everytime there is a windows update now.  I have turned Onedrive off by unsynching and "quitting" Oneddrive, but sometimes an update will turn it back on.   I have been fighting it for 2 years.  Good luck!
