It would have helped to know the account, however I assume it is a linked account that links a balance sheet account with totals from one of the subjournals.  An example of this is Accounts Receivable or Vacation Pay for Employees.

The total of all invoices owing from customers is supposed to balance to the same balance on the balance sheet for the same date.  To affect the balance sheet balance, you need to post an entry to the applicable customer in the Sales module.

The total of all vacation pay owing to employees comes from the amounts owed to individual employees and the total should match with the balance sheet liability account.  To change the balance sheet balance for vacation pay, you must alter the amount owed to an employee.

You can run the Maintenance, Check Data Integrity menu option to see most of the balance sheet linked accounts.  Inventory is not listed here but if you have linked individual inventory items to Asset accounts, the same issue applies.
