windows 8.1 issue

SOLVED

I just upgraded my computer to Windows 8.1 and now I cannot get any of my Simply programs to load.    Everything I try I get the error message that Simply has encountered a problem and that Windows will try to find a solution.   It can't find one so it shuts down.  It does this for all my versions (2008, 2010, 2011 & 2012).   The only one that seems to still work is 2013.

I have year end and payroll for several clients so I desperately need my other versions to work!   Has anyone else encountered this?  If so, what is the solution.  Will uninstalling and reinstalling help?   If I do need to reinstall them all, do I need to install all the releases in order or can I just do the most recent one?

check PROGRAMS AND FEATURES in the control panel and make sure all the .NETs SP are installed

check to make sure .NET 3.5 and 2.0 are turned on

if you upgraded from windows 7 to 8 check the conversion/upgrade log for any clues to .NET conversion issues

    Hi Swissmrs59

You stated you have upgraded your computer to Window 8.1. Does that mean you bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 and you are now trying to install all the older Simply programs. OR does it you had an existing computer with another version of Windows on it and upgraded just the Windows version?

If it is a new computer you might get lucky and be able to install the older Simply programs or you may not. Sage 2013 is fine and so is Sage 2014. I am hoping you still have the older computer and can use it... that would be your best bet.

Now if you had an existing computer and just upgraded from another Windows version to Windows 8.1 usually what is needed is a reinstall of the programs. Once again you still may have problems with the older version of Simply anything before Sage 2013.

Best case scenario is you bought a new computer and you still have the old computer to work with.

    Hope this helps

not sure what exactly you mean by the above.  I went to the list of programs but I don't see anything that mentions .NET    I only upgraded from 8 to 8.1.

I upgraded my current computer from 8 to 8.1.    If there would still be a problem with versions prior to 2013 then I have a serious issue as I cannot upgrade those clients as I share the Simply file with them and they are not willing to buy a new version of Simply.

    Hi Swissmrs59

Okay that gives me more information. I suggest you run your Window's update and see what else shows up to update. I have found that there are updates to updates. I also recommend before you rerun the Window update do a shutdown of the computer and then power it up again. See if you still have the same problem. If the problem persists run the Window update and update all the important updates. Check then the optional ones, if there are updates to Window or as GwG stated in his/her post for .Net Framework do all of those too. Once again after all the updates are done restart the computer and try again.

    Hope this helps

windows updates did not work.  so I tried to uninstall one of them (2012 Premium), but during the uninstall I got the following error.  Unhandled Exception.  Error 0x80040707. DLL Function call crashed:ISRT._regquerykeyvalue.   Setup will now terminate.

So now I am really stuck.  I cannot open it nor uninstall it.  Any suggestions?  I really need this working for payroll this week.

Best case scenario, roll back your windows upgrade back to version 8!

apparently you cannot roll back the update.  I would have to refresh my PC back to it's original condition when I bought it and it did not come with discs to re install windows 8.

I am running Win 8.1 Pro 64bit and have Pro versions 2010,2011,2012,2013 and 2014 installed . I am able to open all versions using the sample data. I started with Win 7 and upgraded to Win 8 then to Win 8.1 with no problems. Have you tried right clicking your mouse on the Simply icon go to properties, compatibility and run the compatibility trouble shooter? Try right clicking the mouse on the Simply icon then run as administrator

my issue at the moment is I cannot even reinstall Simply as I keep getting the above error when I try to run setup.   I am assuming there is some setting in Windows somewhere that is preventing me from installing Simply but I have not been able to find a solution.  refreshing my PC is an absolute last resort.

" during the uninstall I got the following error.  Unhandled Exception.  Error 0x80040707. DLL Function call crashed:ISRT._regquerykeyvalue.   Setup will now terminate."

I read that error message as meaning the uninstall was not completed which means your 2012 could still be there.

    1) are you logged on to Win 8.1 as administrator?

    2) Did you try right clicking on the Simply icon and running the program as administrator? What was the result?

    3) Did you try right clicking the mouse on the Simply icon and go to properties, compatibility , run the compatibility trouble shooter? What was the result?

I was able to finally uninstall it after rebooting several times and running windows update a few times.  However, when I tried to reinstall it, I got the same message.    How do I know if I am logged in to 8.1 as administrator?   When I updated to 8.1 it at one point asked for my user name and password.  I have no idea what my password is so I chose the option at the bottom of the screen saying I was not me.     I did try option 3 above and still kept getting the same error trying each one.

Strangely enough, I can now open my other versions of Simply, but still stuck on this one as it's the only one I tried to uninstall and reinstall to see if it would solve the issue yesterday of not being to open any of my Simply versions (except 2013 Pro).

That fact you do not know your user name and password may be your problem. The fact you opted for the" I am not me" is the likely the source of all your problems. Win 8.1 thinks you are some one other than the person who has permission to open the program and won't open the program I would encourage you to setup a proper Win 8.1 logon account.

It appears I am logged in under my user name and password as when I set up my computer the first time I opted for the auto log in where I am signed in automatically when I turn on my computer every day.  The login screen comes up briefly but I don't have to do anything and it just carries on and logs in.   If was I was not logged in I likely would not have access to all the other programs and data on my computer.    It was only when upgrading to 8.1 that is wanted me to manually enter it...but of course I didn't remember it at that time.

Now you know the source of your problem. The new versions of Windows are very security sensitive. For anyone installing Win 8.1 this is a long install. I have an HP desktop with I5 processor,  8 gb of ram and using high speed cable internet. It took me in excess of 5 hours to download all the updates. After it downloaded the main download there where additional updates to download and install. So anyone doing the update give yourself lots of time to do the downloads and 4 or 5 restarts. Make sure you have a logon account setup.

I have success!   I had a feeling after all the searching I did of the error I was getting and several of them referred to the fact it was probably something wrong with the registry entries.   I asked a friend who knows a lot about computers last night and he suggested I try CCLEANER.  I downloaded it and ran the registry cleaner part of it and voila....after that I could install Sage 2012.   All my Sage programs now open normally.  Phew....at least I didn't have to resort to doing a computer refresh.    Now I just have to fix my other little glitches on other programs that 8.1 brought me.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions along the way!    I can now merry go on with payroll and year end.
