When are Microsoft and Sage ending their support for my Microsoft Windows XP operating system?

Microsoft is ending its support for Microsoft Windows XP as of April 8, 2014. Once Microsoft stops support for Windows XP, Sage will also stop supporting Sage 50 on computers using Windows XP.

Although the current version of Sage 50 will continue to operate on computers using Windows XP, we highly recommend that Sage 50 customers running on Windows XP upgrade their operating system fairly soon to a supported version of Windows. Going forward, in addition to security concerns, there is the increased risk that some features and functionality of Sage 50 will stop working on Windows XP because updates released after April 8, 2014 will not be tested or verified on computers running Windows XP. Furthermore, after July 2014, subsequent Sage 50 updates will not be able to be installed on computers running Windows XP.  Sage 50 customers not on a supported version of Windows will need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows in order to install Sage 50 updates.

  • Keith - just curious - do you have a percentage of how many of Sage 50 (or any Sage products in Canada) users are using Windows XP versus Windows 7/8.1? I've never been asked what version of windows I'm using on any surveys Sage had.

Also is Sage Canada looking to thoroughly implement its products into Windows 8 or are they just going to sort of bypass that and go straight into Windows 9? This question might be a bit too early to ask.

    Hi Smithco,

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Based on the calls coming in to Support, we see an approximate of 25% of our customers using XP.  We apologize that we cannot come up with an exact number.  We have been actively encouraging XP users to update prior to the April EOL date. In addition to Sage 50 not supporting XP, Microsoft will not be providing further updates and it will open their machines to threat of malware/viruses/etc.

Sage 50 is fully supported by us under Windows Vista, 7 and 8.  We will continue to work on Sage 50 and have it compatible to the latest version of Windows operating system in the market.

wow - I did not know Vista was still supported since that was prior to Windows XP (I think?). Anyway thanks for the feedback  - I had thought the XP users would have been quite a bit higher than the approximate 25%.

    Hi Smithco,

For your information, XP is released in 2001 (about 12 years ago).  Vista is released in 2007 (about 7 years ago) .

ok thanks - guess XP is getting rather old then :)

The big problem with XP is .NET was an addon rather than incorporated into the operating system. As long as .NET was loaded properly on XP Sage and Simply worked.

XP was really 4 major releases, each Service Pack was a fairly major change, so it's really not 2001 software.  It's more like 2001 was the first release of that 'model', and they're discontinuing it.  If you have good anti-malware software installed, and your current computer is getting it done, there's no need to panic on April 9.

My impression of Windows 8 over the past year has been that there are a great many small improvements, overshadowed by the one gigantic idiocy of making each program cover the entire screen, like they did in 1981 DOS.

  • I installed Windows 7 and my Simply Accounting 2006 no longer recognizes Crystal Reports, which means i can no longer email invoices.

Is there a fix for it. I tried using the Simply Accounting forms, but somehow they are tied to the Crystal Reports . Other than that , the program works no problem.

I have no need to upgrade, and I don't see why i should have to. A fix would be nice.

    Hi Livio,

You may need to install Crystal report writer in your new windows and make sure that under report and forms, the path is pointing to the correct template.

For more information, you can follow the link below.

Error: "Crystal Report Writer could not be found. To customize forms and reports, please install Crystal Report Writer." - KB26945

    Hope this helps.

The required .NET Framework 4.5 is not available on Windows XP Pro SP3. So don't install Sage 50 V2014 to it.

  • in reply to Louis Kam

I've installed the 2014.2 on XP Pro SP3 and it seemed to work.

There were no error messages during installation or operation regarding the .NET Framework 4.5.
