Trying to create my first invoice, getting stuck

I completed a project ("project A") for a company, the agreed price was $1,000. This is a one-off project and unlikely to repeat. I now want to bill the project and am getting a bit lost as to how to do that. The invoice template seems geared for selling widgets rather than unique projects. For example, I am not sure what to enter for "Units". And I am not sure how I can get GST applied to the $1,000 amount. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Otherwise I suppose I will have to try my accountant next week.

On the invoice screen, select view from the top menu bar, move mouse down to invoice style, on the fly out list click on "professional"

To extend what Bruce is saying, the only columns required to be filled in are the amount and account columns, but most people use a tax code as well.

So it 's not a problem to just enter those columns and a description like "I did your project, please pay me" (although you might want to make it a little more useful for the client). You can reduce the number of columns on screen so you don't have to tab through them if you like, either how Bruce indicated or through the View, Customise Journal menu option.
