barcode scanning

I have a client who runs a hair salon and is in the process of adding a clothing boutique.

She would like to use barcode scanning using the barcodes that already come on all the product she purchases.

I phone Sales early this week and was told Sage 50 Premium would be able to do this.

She purchased it and I am in the process of setting it up but I don't see an option for scanning barcodes and I can't find anything in the help file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have done bar code scanning with the DOS version years ago. Normally you just put the cursor in the item code field, point the scanner at the bar code and pray. Does it not work this way?

I'm assuming the client has a bar code scanner of course.

Bar code scanning was working on the 2016 version but only to fill fields as Richard mentioned. Place the cursor in the required field and scan the code. The input will be the required alpha-numeric as read by the scanner. Inventory will also have to be set up so that the product code is the same as the scanned bar code. I have not used it as yet in a 2017 version of the program.

Barcode 'wedge' scanners are so-called because the 'wedge' in between the keyboard and the computer.  The only thing that the barcode scanner does, is type in the UPC numbers (and can be programmed to send a 'tab', 'Enter', 'down-arrow' or other keys to move to the next field.

The only information on the barcode itself is the (10?) digit number under the bars.  Retail point-of-sale systems use a lookup database to get the product information (size, colour, description, brand, price, etc.) for each product's UPC number code.

If you really had to, I suppose you could enter each UPC code in the description field, or use the UPC code as the 'item code', along with the keystrokes to move the cursor to the next field.  It could be a little clumsy to operate in getting to the first data entry field would be a half-dozen keystrokes, and printing a whole sheet of paper for a bottle of shampoo seems like overkill, but it would work.

Sage 50 does have some extra fields that could be used for the UPC code by a third-party developer.
