As part of their plans to modernise the tax system, the UK Government has changed the way VAT registered businesses create and submit VAT Returns. This is known as Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT.

As of April 2019, businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold of £85,000 are required to file their VAT returns electronically under MTD using accounting software and are obligated to keep digital records of their transactions.

As you're still using Sage 50 Accounts, you'll need to switch to Sage 50cloud Accounts or another one of our MTD solutions. You can call our Sales team on 0800 33 66 33, or if you prefer, leave your details and we'll call you back.

Or, if you already have Sage 50cloud Accounts, you should enter your 50cloud registration details. You can obtain these from our website here.

You can then activate MTD in your Sage 50cloud Accounts software and submit your VAT returns to HMRC under MTD.

I still have no answers from either Sage or HMRC.   Can anybody help?  I have done all that is suggested and my Sage50 cloud is fully activated.  The return simply will not go and shows duplicate error yet HMRC have not received it and suggest it is the software at fault and they can do nothing.  Sage help tells me to tell HMRC to cancel any submission and re-submit but as HMRC have never received one they cannot do this - HELP!

It might be worth contacting us to run through this. However, to resubmit your return:

1. Take a backup of your data as it stands now.
2. Go to File > Restore > restore to the backup file, prior to this first VAT submission.
3. Go to Settings > Company Preferences > VAT tab > tick 'Enable MTD for VAT submissions' > ok.
4. Try submit your VAT return again.
5. If that works, restore back to the backup file taken in step 1

I did all this and I still got the sme anser as 'duplicate submissionl. the Vat return was already submitted for the given period.

I really do not know where to go from here!

This may be a long shot but I am having exactly the same issue at the moment. Wandered how you actually solved this.

Hi Sean. Did you find a solution to this as I am having same issue today. Ran Vat return tried to submit but it stated that it was a duplicate submission. Been doing this for years and never had an issue. Been onto HMRC and Vat return not there ...Its all very strange.

Hello, I had this  a while ago and counld'nt find a solution so I kept logging in to upload the return and eventually the HMRC website accepted it. I could also not see the supposed return on the website.I would keep trying to submit the return in the hope you have the same success as I had. Good luck.
