rpt file weirdness

SOLVED
hello!
our sage environment is setup so that we have a shared drive where all the .rpt files are kept. all installs are configured to point to that directory through the application.config file.
except my machine. i edit the .rpt files locally and then update the shared resource.  i moved onto a new machine running windows 8.1 and i'm trying to copy .rpt files over to this hard drive.
at first i had issues with permissions. after resolving that issue here's the kicker...
i copied the edited soztc001.rpt file from the shared resource to the local hard drive. but when i open that moved file on the local hard drive, it shows the default soztc001.rpt file and not our edited file!!
HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?!
