Datto Backups and Sage 50 Accounting US Edition

SUGGESTED

Has anyone installed and utilized Datto Backup Solutions with a server running Sage 50 Accounting US Edition 2018? I am running a full clone of the server every hour, it is crashing and freezing up the server so i have to keep disabling the backup. I talked with Sage and they told me that SAGE is not VSS aware and uses pervasive so it may be causing some problems trying to clone the server. Has anyone installed Datto Alto 150 and had any problems with SAGE crashing because of it? If so what was your solution?

  • Hi Adam,

    We recommend Enveloc.  https://www.bestbusinessstrategies.com/Enveloc-Backup.htm

It will send your backup to a remote location in the USA.  This is excellent because if you have a major natural disaster in your community or your building is damaged by fire or water, your data is safe.

They are great to work with and their prices are reasonable.

I've never used Datto Backup Solutions but, in general I think that trying to back up Sage 50 while it's in use will probably not give good results. I can certainly see the appeal of hourly clones of the server, but I would recommend just doing a nightly backup of the Sage 50 data. You may also want to incorporate Sage 50's backup scheduler. It works in conjunction with Windows' task scheduler. You can find it by going to Sage 50 Accounting in the Start menu, then Sage 50 Resources & Help, then Sage 50 Automatic Backup Configuration. You can also get to it from inside Sage 50 by going to the File menu and choosing Automatic Backup.

I think we may have to do that. Thanks for the reply. Do you not have to shut down the PSQL databases or any services before you run the full backup with a script of any kind?

As long as everyone is logged out of Sage 50, I've never had a problem running a backup while the Pervasive PSQL Workgroup Engine service is running. I use IDrive on my own computer and have set up several customers on IBackup, but I would expect similar results with other backup tools.

One of the reasons to consider scheduling a Sage 50 Automatic Backup to run a little before your regular backup is that it has an option to log users out prior to running the backup. So you get that backup as well as increasing the odds of a good backup from Datto.

That's really helpful. My problem is i am trying to run a backup every hour (Which obviously I can't have users log out every hour.)  It seems more and more that I will need to only run 1 backup at the end of the day or run one at lunch and then one at the end of the day. I tried doing hourly backups and it completely froze the server up and had to reboot.
