Use the sort on the item drop down list.  It will sort by ID, then by description!

If this is not the right list, show us what you are looking at.

I am trying to search through material descriptions. For example, I have entered an invoice and I get a credit memo later on. I need to find that invoice that matches up with the credit memo by searching for the material description under the 'Description' column since that is the common denominator between the two.

That would have been good information to include in your original questions. You probably need to run a Purchase Journal and then use the Find button to search the report for the description you want. If you need to open the transaction you can double-click on it in the report.

You may right click in any of the boxes and create a new entry or you can double click the item and display the source document. 

You will need to set this page up with the COG at the top of the page.  Add as may fields as you would like.  Each catagory then has it's own cog where you can choose which items will be displayed.
