As I'm sure you know, when you open their company file it will be converted to the version you are using and can't be converted back. But the format for importing general journal entries is the same in all of those versions. So if all you want to do is make general journal entries and then export them by going to the File menu > Select Import Export > General Ledger, the file you create could be imported into their version 2016 file.
