The Item ID field length cannot be increased.

The Item ID length cannot be changed.  It is 20 characters.  Also, do not use " marks in the item.  They tell the CSV file to skip to the next column.  If you import in the future this will cause you issues.

Well, that is sad news. I suppose the comments I found referring to a longer field length were wishful thinking.

Speaking of the double-quotes issue, can anyone refer me to a possible list of other reserved characters that should not be used in an Item Id? We have already discovered that the '+' character is rejected along with anything following it in an Item Id.

Why do you need the ID longer?  You have the upper description field that you can sort by also 

Because we should no longer be limited by DOS era field limitations. Memory is cheap and descriptive item ID's are good.

Because I often prefix a manufacturer code to the model ID and then suffix codes for type and color, often resulting in ID's longer than 20 characters.

You could use a combination of the Item ID and Description to get all the characters in the fields.  People complain about the size of the program itself.  This just makes it bigger. 

Also, when emailing a PO to a vendor, you can replace the ID with a part number.  Maybe putting the manufacturing code in the part field, would suffice.
