Why can I not copy an assembly into a serialized assembly?

SUGGESTED

My shop manager and I were trying to create serialized part numbers for some items that would benefit from being able to track serial numbers.

It was easy enough, but when it came time to add the serialized part number into an assembly, Sage informed me I cannot do that.

I assume I can put a serialized part number into a serialized assembly, but when you copy a part number, it also copies the item class, so there is no way for me to incorporate serialized part numbers into the assemblies we already have unless we start from square one and completely recreate every single assembly that would contain them, which is at least 2 dozen if not more.

So, my question is, what is the point of restricting either putting serialized part numbers into non-serialized assemblies, or preventing the selection of a new item class when one copies a part?

Also if this is not the right discussion group, apologies, but I cannot access the rest of the new discussion drop down as it just cuts off and there appears to be no option to scroll.

Thank you.

    Hi ,

Thanks for posting on Sage City.

I will let another member of the Sage 50 US Support Group that is knowlegable about assembles reply to your main question.

I just wanted to let you know that you have posted in the correct Sage 50 US forum.  The green +New button presents some of the options, but to see the full list of forums, you can access that by clicking on the Forums tab from the group homepage or by visiting this direct link:

    https://www.sagecity.com/support_communities/sage50_accounting_us/f

Hope that helps to clarify the available Sage 50 US forums on Sage City.

    Thanks,

    Derek

I'll start with the good news.

There's an old trick for copying items that will let you change the item class on the new item.

Start out in Maintain Inventory items with the assembly you want to copy. Now simply type something new in the Item ID field (maybe add an "S" for serialized, or type in an entirely new ID) and press tab or enter. It might look like nothing happened, but you just copied your assembly item. The new item is has not been saved yet (unlike when you use the Copy button) so you still have the chance to change the Item Class to Serialized Assembly.

This method works in all of the Maintain ______ windows, so you can use it for vendors, GL Accounts, etc.

Now for the bad news. You cannot use serialized item as a component of an assembly, even when it's a serialized assembly.

Thank you for the suggestion for copying the assembly over, I'm sure that will come in handy, but now I'm just more baffled concerning serialized part numbers- if they can't be incorporated into any assemblies, what even is the point of them? How can I use them?

I don't disagree that it would be helpful to be able to use serialized components in an assembly, and in other more advanced software you can (for a price). But the intended use of a serialized assembly in Sage 50 is to allow you to assign a serial number to something you build. And serialized stock items are for serialized items  that you buy and resell in the same form.
