Tips on overhauling Chart of Accounts? Our old one deeply sucks.

I inherited a Chart of Accounts that's just awful--too many accounts that are too detailed, too many that are too general, too many expense accounts that are badly defined, etc. I'm using Sage 50 US (about to upgrade to 2023).

I drafted a revision. Does anyone have advice on the best way to implement it? I could upload it and move all the balances at year-end; I could fix the old one line by line to reshape it into the new one; I could start a new company altogether, but that would mean losing easy access to past years' data (though I may be losing most of that just with all the reclassifying). Any tips? Thanks for any ideas--doesn't this seem like an ideal way to spend the holiday season?
