anticipated upgrade

SUGGESTED

We are anticipating having to upgrade from 16.1 to 18.1 as 16.1 will no longer be supported with year end updates.  We are a small company and have a workstation that serves as a peer to peer network to which 3 other workstations are connected.  The server workstation is not an actual server and is running Windows 7 Pro as are our other workstations. I read the release notes which said that on the server one has to be running Windows server 2008 or 2012 or 2016. I called Timberline and the rep said that yes the server has to be running a Server Operating system.  I am questioning this as in the past, I have had the same discussion and when Timberline support understood that ours was a peer to peer and not an actual server we were then told that Windows 7 pro would work fine in that instance.  I am not completey sure that support understood what I was asking. So (at last) my question. Can I upgrade to 18.1 using Windows 7 pro on a peer to peer server or do I indeed have to install a new operating system in order for the program to work?

    Hi Rhonda,

Yes you may still utilize a peer to peer environment using Windows 7 with version 18.1, however you must have the 64bit version as we no longer support 32bit operating systems.  Also, if you plan to make use of Sage SQL Replicator or Mobile Projects, you would need to migrate to a supported operating system for those features.  See our system requirements article for more information and for links to additional resources.

I was unaware Verions 16.1 will no longer be supported. We are a small company and cannot affort to update the hardware to go to version 17.1.  How are other companies going to handle this? How were you made aware 16.1 would no longer be supported and when does this take effect?  We just transitioned to 16.1 at end of 2016 so less than two years ago.

Recently Sage has updated recently. I believe 16.1 is supported until the end of 2018. Typically an email comes out about updates when they are released. As for the requirements I cannot find much on minimums since 16.1 outlined an 8gb ram server and 4gb ram workstations. Although it may help performance some I picture the 16gb ram and new version i7 as a big ask for all client machines.

Usually Timberline only supports year end updates for the last two versions.  In this case it would 17.1 and 18.1.  I called support and asked if 16.1 would be supported at year end and they said no year end updates for 16.1. We too just upgraded to 16.1 at the end of 2016 and it didn't go well.  In anticipation of having to upgrade, I asked the questions as I want everying upgraded and running as smooth as possible prior to year end.  I don't like the pressure of having to upgrade at last minute and be under the gun.  Fortunately we have no need for the SQL replicator or mobile apps so we are able to continue with our peer to peer system, eliminating the need for a dedicated server which had to run a server operating system.  It is my understanding that If your hardware is at least 64 bit Windows 7 or better with 8 GB ram, then you can upgrade to 18.1 as a peer to peer network with little or no cost if you have a Timberline support contract for the 18.1 upgrade.  Users:  Please correct me if I am wrong

I just upgraded from 16.1 to 18.1.4  on a windows 7 pro with only 8 gigs ram stand alone system and everything went well. I do not notice any slow down and have no plans to use the SQL version. The SQL version is a separate install.

    So far so good
