What is the best method for cleaning up Audit Tables

I need to purge some old records from the audit tables and was hoping to get some of the best known methods for this task.

    Did you ever get an answer, or did you come up with a way to do this you've found to be safe?

    I'm about to the point of just issuing a SQL delete from the sql server. I asked support never got a great answer, other than being pointed at that purge utility.
