Do I need to upgrade to Quantum by Sage?

SUGGESTED

Hi everyone,  I wanted to get a little info before I make my decision on upgrading from Sage 50 Premium to Quantum by Sage.

Currently I am using Sage 50 Premium Accounting 2015 hosted on a single workstation computer, and a second computer that accesses the company data over the network.  Nothing big, simple workgroup setup with network shares.  Everything works great on the hosting computer.  I can access data, create reports, and process checks extremely fast.  This is not the case on the second computer.  Some tasks that take seconds on the hosting computer takes minutes on the second computer.

Now, I worked with the sage support team and they are telling me that I should upgrade to Quantum by Sage.  I would have no issue with doing this, but they cant assure me that this will solve my issue.  This is a big deal for me, as this is going to be a pretty large investment to "Maybe" solve my issue.  The reason I am being told to upgrade is because my company file is too large for Sage 50 Premium Accounting and would be better handled in Quantum by Sage.  As of writing this my company file is 410MB.

Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Before you upgrade to Quantum you should have a good IT person take a look at your network. I think that's more likely to be the source of your problem. I can't guarantee that Quantum isn't the answer, but I would think it would be slow everywhere if you had outgrown Premium. Try opening Bellwether or one of the other sample companies. Is it slow too? If it is, then the problem definitely isn't the amount of data and Quantum won't be the answer.

Also be sure that the other computer isn't using WiFi; they must have a wired network connection.

Thank you for your reply. The second workstation is using wifi to connect, so I am going to run a network cable and see if this helps everything.

Following. I'm having the same issue.

Are you using WiFi too? If you are, the only fix is to switch to a wired network connection. If you have both wired and wireless connections at your computer you may want to turn off the WiFi to make sure it's not being used by Sage 50.

In addition to Steve's comments, double the RAM on the 2nd workstation if you can, that will speed things up. Rather than spend the money to go to Quantum, I would purge older data.Make sure you run the purge from the server.

    NO!

Quantum DOES NOT FIX SPEED ISSUES. I'm running Quantum on a peer-peer network, and only the "server" has any tolerable speed. They told me I needed to upgrade, too, and since some of the features sounded helpful, I went ahead and did it. It did not help the speed even a little bit. It's all marketing BS. Any speed improvement claims they make are from studies that were done around fifteen years ago, back when the two versions used different database engines, and that is no longer the case. If anything has changed from that, then it is only because they have intentionally slowed down their cheaper products to manufacture your need for the more expensive program.

The problem lies within Peachtree's database management and query method, which is very poorly written code. With my Quantum, if I access a report, the network is at about 1% capacity, and I still wait a long time. If I add the "Bill To" column to the Sales Invoice List, on a remote pc it will take well over an hour to display, all the while the network is almost totally unused.

My workarounds have been to make sure I never add a column with an asterisk. (At least they are kind enough to tell us when it will be extra slow.) If I must view one of those columns, I first limit it to the minimum time range, and when I am done, I immediately remove the column.

I also often remote-desktop into my "server" pc, where things run much faster, even though the two computers are only two desks apart.

My experience...do not upgrade unless you really need to. The price point sucks and there is NO performance enhancement. I have an IT background and looking at your switch/hub and going with a cabled connection will make big changes in most cases. Also, RAM will help. 410MB although not recommended by Sage has not been an issue for us other than some possible corruption issues, we can't be sure actual cause but this is most likely from what my research is showing. 410 MB will still be just as slow on Quantum and the delayed processing feature (whatever they call it) seems to make things worse in our environment. I have Sage on a Server and everyone accesses that system through Remote Desktop Services. This seems to be the fastest way to run it and the least headache (been consulting with a company that has used Sage/Peachtree and the predecessor back in the 90's).
