Inactive Inventory Values

Question

I just started working with this company, and looking at the inventory list I noticed that there were inactive inventory with balances, both positive & negatives. When I asked about it, I was told that these codes were made inactive & new codes were created to replace it. Should there be balances in inactive code? Should these inventory codes have zero balances? Can someone kindly confirm?

You are correct. They should have made an inventory adjustment to move the existing inventory to a new code or write the inventory off if it was actually non-existent. ( ie .. set up as a stock item when it should have been a non-stock item. 
 
As long as you have a value associated with an inactive item, it will always be part of the inventory balance.
