Is it possible to migrate data from an XP installation to Windows 10?

Hi everyone.

I have a client that is still running a single Windows XP machine in their office for the sole purpose of running Timeslips. They're adding another employee and need the space so this machine is going to be replaced with a Windows 10 machine that will also run Timeslips. However, they're hoping to keep the data. Is it possible to do this directly, or must it be done in a few steps? Is it possible at all or do they need to start fresh?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

You can purchase an upgraded version of Timeslips and the data will upgrade from their current version. Depending on how old the version is they might need to do a stage to upgrade. In order to install a new computer and to get an additional licenses they definitely will have to upgrade. If you would like help with this or on pricing for the upgrade and additional license please let me know and I will be happy to assist

We can best advise you if you can tell us what version of Timeslips your client is currently running.  The OS of the computer that it runs on now is of much less value.

But as Caren2 has previously said, old data does migrate to new versions of Timeslips. IF they are running an XP machine, it MIGHT be because they are using the older 16-bit product, in which case, you will struggle trying to get that to run on a Windows 10 machine simply because most new machines are 64-bit.

I would echo Caren2's advice about just upgrading since it is a single license, and going ahead and migrating the data up to the current Firebird SQL database, as well as the idea that if the data is really old, you might want to involve a consultant who could step it through the various versions on that migration.

If you buy the upgrade direct from Sage and try to migrate the data yourself, you will have less control. It will just try to migrate it through all previous versions without stopping.  I wouldn't do that with a really old database.  I like to get a copy of the database, open it up inhouse, run some utilities and reports, then step it up a few versions at a time and finally compare reports when I am done to make sure critical balances are still the same.  There are usually a few clean up issues, like tweaking converted layouts and training staff on the changes, but not too bad.

All Certified Consultants are also resellers, so I would be remiss in not offering to give you a quote on your software upgrade. Smile If you are interested, just let me know via contact information below, and I can get you the information that you would need to take to your client so they can make an educated decision about what they want to do.
