My client today asked the same thing, they are constantly growing and adding sites to their DB.  They even said what will happen in 10 years when they have to open 20 years of fiscal calendars!

The first fiscal year is set by company under Setup, Organizational structure, Companies on the Acct tab.

The drawback is that X3 stores data by accounting date and by fiscal year number /period number depending on the table/function. The year 2001 was probably set up as the first fiscal year to make it easy for users when running reports that used fiscal year number/ period year. They didn't have to struggle over "what fiscal year number is 2018?" Year two was 2002; year three was 2003, etc. Cost calculation uses Fiscal years. Keep this in mind when running reports across multiple companies.
