Errors when trying to finish entering history and start a new year.

When I try to start a new year I am told I need to finish entering history.  However I have not been able to finish entering the history on the accounts, because it says I have accounts that are not linked.  When I try to link an account where needed my only options for linking are random expense accounts that are not correct or else the drop down box appears blank.

    It appears you do not have any linked accounts setup for payroll. Are you going to use the payroll module? If you are you will need to setup the linked accounts for payroll payable accounts and payroll expense accounts. If you are not going to use the payroll module then you will have to turn it off by doing the following: go to your main menu, select setup, user preferences, view, then untick employees and payroll and the employees window icon. This should stop engaging the linked accounts for payroll.
